Ionic Liquids and Supercritical CO2
نویسنده
چکیده
Ionic liquids (ILs) are organic salts that have melting points around room temperature. They have received tremendous attention recently due to their low volatility and subsequent potential to reduce air pollution if used as replacements for volatile organic solvents. As a result, they have the potential to be used in a wide variety of chemical processing applications, including as solvents for reactions, gas separations, extractive distillation, lubrication, heat transfer, and polymer processing. Physical properties and the phase behavior of ionic liquids with a wide range of compounds are important in evaluating ILs for many of these applications. One area of particular interest in our research at the University of Notre Dame is the interaction of ionic liquids with high pressure or supercritical CO2. We will discuss three aspects of ionic liquid/CO2 systems. First, we will show the phase behavior of CO2 with ionic liquids and how the solubility of the gas in the liquid is influenced by the choice and structure of the cation and the anion. Second, we will show how supercritical CO2 can be used to extract solutes from ionic liquids. Third, we will demonstrate how lower pressure gaseous carbon dioxide can cause a phase separation in organic and aqueous solutions containing ILs. Finally, we will touch on the implications of the interesting phase behavior that we have found for CO2/ionic liquid mixtures.

A Novel and Environmentally Benign Approach to Combine Reactions and Separations Using Ionic Liquids and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide
A novel and environmentally benign approach is described to combine reactions and separations, using simultaneously ionic liquids (ILs) and supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2). The novel approach is based on the phenomenon that two (partially) immiscible liquid phases upon pressurization with CO2 is able to force to form one homogeneous fluid phase. The homogeneous phase allows reactions to be...

The combination of scCO2 with a non-volatile liquid such as ionic liquids, water, or poly(ethylene glycol) creates a biphasic mixture suitable for homogeneous catalysis with facile catalyst/product separation and catalyst recycling. Continuous-flow processes are also possible. Dissolution of the CO2 into the nonvolatile liquid during the reaction can have desirable or undesirable effects on the...

متن کاملSupercritical CO2 and ionic liquids for the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass in bioethanol production.
Owing to high petroleum prices, there has been a major push in recent years to use lignocellulosic biomass as biorefinery feedstocks. Unfortunately, by nature's design, lignocellulosic biomass is notoriously recalcitrant. Cellulose is the most abundant renewable carbon source on the planet and comprises glucan polysaccharides which self-assemble into paracrystalline microfibrils. The extent of ...
متن کاملSynthesis and Characterization of a New Ionic Liquid Soluble in Supercritical CO2
Supercritical fluids (SCF) are very interesting solvents with unique properties, such as high solute diffusivities, low viscosity and density values similar to liquids. All these features can be tuned with modifications in the pressure or temperature or the addition of modifiers [1]. Supercritical CO2 (sc-CO2) is one of the most promising alternative solvents because it is cheap, abundant, non-...
